This saree is literally wearable art. Handwoven tussar or wild silk is painstakingly hand-painted with stunning mythological motifs using natural dyes. An art form from Srikalahasti in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, in the south of India, Pen Kalamkari brings alive stories on scrolls- and now on sarees. The base fabric is first treated to become pliable and absorb colour well. Motifs are then carefully sketched by hand, over many days, and then colours are filled in by hand again. The silk is washed many times in milk and then in water before each colour is painted on. Here’s to a masterpiece in your wardrobe!
